Richard's birthdate can be pinpointed at September 5, 1660. The Surry County Order Book, 1671-90, p 348 notes: "Richard Washington this date being of full age appeared in Court and signed and delivered a conveyance of land..." dated September 5, 1681.

There is no information concerning the education of Richard Washington, but he signed documents at an early age and he seems to have been a responsible citizen and a good businessman, or trader, as well as a planter.
p 104
Richard was a man of some prominence in Surry Co, VA. He secured several land grants totaling thousands of acres and the records show numerous transactions. Richard's children contracted advantageous marriages. His residence was about 3 miles below modern Claremont and about 9 miles above Jamestown. His estate consisted of thousands of acres of land, many horses, cattle, and swine, and considerable merchandise.

Surry County, VA Records , p 181, March 1, 1677, Indenture between Thomas Blunt and Richard Washington of the one part and John Goreing of the other part. Whereas Charles Ford was in his lifetime and at his death, in possession of 250 acres of land, 50 acres held of the King by Patent May 19, 1638, James City...at Dancing Point upon Col. John Flood, lately in possession of Nath. Knight, dec'd.., granted to Charles Ford, the first Proprietor, Charles Ford died without a will and land escheated to the King...went to Thos. Blunt and Richard Washington then orphans and sons-in-law unto Charles Ford, and now to Jno. Goring.

Note from Darden Family History with notes on Ancestry of Allied Families, Compiled by Newton Jasper Darden, Washington, DC 1953, p 102: The deed was signed by Thomas Blunt July 2, 1678, but Rich Washington did not sign until September 5, 1681. This may indicate that Rich was 3 years younger than his half-brother and therefore born in 1660. It seems probable that the Escheator General by Inquisition found that the plantation formerly owned by Charles Ford should be considered as rightfully belonging to Mary, the Widow Ford, and to her children. Thomas Blunt was indeed a stepson to Charles Ford (and the old term was often son-in-law), but that Richard Washington should be so designated seems an error because Charles Ford died before RIchard Washington was born.
