Johnson, Harrington and Allied Familes, compiled by Mrs. Clarke H. Johnson, The American Historical Society, New York, 1933, p 41-43:
He was a Revolutionary soldier and is listed in the "Rhode Island Military Census of 1777" as follows: Josiah Herrington, 3rd, of Scituate, 16-50, able". According to his pension record his service reads: December 1775 volunteered and served 1 month as Private, Co. commanded by Ensign Reuben Reed, Col. West's Regt. RI Militia, served at Bristol; January 1776, drafted and served 1 month as Private, at Warwick Neck, Capt. Jeremiah Davis' Co., Col. John Waterman's Regt., RI Militia; February 1776 drafted and served 1 month Private, at Warwick, Capt. Simeon Harrington's Co., COl. John Waterman's Regt., RI Militia; May 1776, served as Private, ...and continued serving for a month or 2 at a time until he was honorably discharged in 1780.
Josiah died intestate, at a court of probate held within and for the town of Foster, January 3, 1848, Ezra Knight, of Foster, was appointed the administrator. Inventory taken January 20, 1848. Louisa Herrinton, widow of Josiah, made the request that certain articles of household furniture appraised with the Inventory "Be set off to her." This request was granted June 11, 1849. Later the dower was assigned to the widow Louisa Herrinton.
